Getting to and Around Colorado Springs

Plan your journey to Colorado Springs and discover the easiest ways to explore the city, its spectacular mountain scenery and the surrounding Rocky Mountains.

Colorado Springs is located in central Colorado, approximately 70 miles south of Denver.

The city is accessible by plane, car and intercity transportation, making it a convenient destination for visitors exploring the Rocky Mountain region.

However, many popular attractions are located outside the city centre, so choosing the right transportation is important.

Flying to Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is the city’s main passenger airport.

Located southeast of downtown, it offers domestic flight connections to several major American cities.

International visitors can reach Colorado Springs through connecting flights at larger airports.

Denver International Airport is another option, particularly if you are planning a longer Colorado road trip.

From either airport, you can continue your journey by rental car or other available ground transportation.

Travelling by Car

Interstate 25 connects Colorado Springs with Denver to the north and Pueblo to the south.

Driving from Denver to Colorado Springs generally takes around one and a half hours, depending on traffic conditions.

A rental car is particularly useful if you want to explore Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs and the surrounding mountain attractions.

Getting Around Colorado Springs

Mountain Metropolitan Transit operates local bus services throughout parts of Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.

Walking is pleasant in downtown Colorado Springs, Old Colorado City and central Manitou Springs.

However, distances between many popular attractions can be considerable.

Taxis and rideshare services provide additional transportation options.

Visiting Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak can be reached by driving the scenic Pikes Peak Highway or travelling aboard the Pikes Peak Cog Railway from Manitou Springs.

The highway is subject to weather conditions, seasonal restrictions and possible temporary closures.

Check current operating information before your visit.

The summit is more than 14,000 feet above sea level, so allow time to adjust to the altitude and avoid strenuous activity if you experience symptoms of altitude sickness.

Do You Need a Car?

If you are mainly staying downtown, you may be able to explore selected attractions using public transportation, taxis and rideshare services.

However, I recommend renting a car if you want to visit several mountain attractions or explore the surrounding region.

For a first visit, allow at least three days in Colorado Springs. This gives you time to discover Garden of the Gods, visit Pikes Peak and explore the city’s historic neighbourhoods.
